Sometimes everything just falls into place.

I spend the weekend, what should be my first two days off since starting at Violent Crimes, sitting in my little garden, reading. When my eyes need a break from autopsy reports, interview transcripts and forensic findings, I tend to my plants and let my thoughts turn over to the meditative motions of digging, weeding, watering, patting down, picking. Grady threatened to recommend me for a transfer out if he heard I’d been in the office on the weekend, insisting on the days off after the intense week, and though I’m quite sure he isn’t laying off this case himself, I do as he orders and stay home.

I make so many connections, it’s almost unbelievable, except here it is in indisputable evidence.

And despite how perfectly it all fits together and paints Patrick Lorenz as absolutely the lying sleaze my instincts know him to be, my years of study and training in psychological profiling fight to be heard, and they insist that none of this makes any sense.

I pick up the phone and call Grady.

“I thought I told you to have the weekend off?”

“I thought we’d established I’m not good at doing as I’m told?” I counter, setting the cell to speakerphone and placing it on the edge of the planter box. I live in a unit, with no real garden; instead I’ve converted the small balcony into a very efficient greenhouse. A plastic screen rolls down to capture the day’s heat in here with the hanging plants, raised planter boxes and the two walls of vertical herb gardens. Hooks in the ceiling support an errant passionfruit vine, and the balcony’s handrail is invisible beneath a heavy load of grapes. It doesn’t matter that beyond the screen, I’m living in the outskirts of a big city; in here, I feel like Poison Ivy in her handmade floral palace.

Grady scoffs. “Well, that’s an outright lie. I doubt you ever broke a rule in your life before you met me, princess goody-two-shoes. Out with it – what did you find?”

I appreciate that despite the joke, in the week since we met, he’s already learned to expect that I won’t simply drop an investigation because I’m told to. He knows I’m still hard at work, just like I’m rather certain he is, too.

Our killers aren’t going to catch themselves.

“It’s Lorenz,” I start to explain as I get into pruning my citrus. It’s not exactly the time of year the books or the web blogs would recommend it, but I go more off feeling, and my gardening technique has always been successful. The leaves have been looking a bit sad for at least the past week, though there really hasn’t been time for me to sit down and deal with them until now. “He’s pissing me off.”

“The fucker’s not even there,” Grady replies mildly. “What’s he done now?”

“Everything. That’s the problem,” I say in frustration, careful not to take my bad mood out on my plants as I clip away the excess foliage.
